APPROACHING CHAOS

Sirio Berati

Approaching Chaos is an exhibition of 13 outcomes that differ in medium but follow coherently the theme of identity. With a unique perspective, Sirio’s work channels his own experiences with self-development and culture.

"Approaching Chaos" presents a typography installation, a human head sculpture, an acrylic painting and 5 different digital photographic series: Descending into the Blue Void, Blue Klein Sea, In the stormy skied and finally Impeded by cultural taboo. Even though the pieces are significantly different in the way they are presented, unfold and created, together they follow a quite complex and a coherent narrative of self realization. Sirio's intention with "Approaching Chaos" is to explore his ideas through different stages of self development and show the process of adapting to the new world, in which Descending into the Blue Void clearly narrates.

Descending Into the Blue Void is an artwork about a confusing state of being of the character in his life. As the tittle suggests, the character is falling into a void, lost on the universe. This piece is mainly influenced by Kerry Skarbakka and Yayoi Kusamat, two contemporary artists.

This artwork is the continuation of the narrative from Descending Into the Blue Void. At this point, the protagonist has reached the blue void emotionally. The piece is monochrome, containing only tones and hues of blues, especially blue 27, creating a distorted surreal image, establishing in this way artist’s intrinsic emotions. The construction of this piece and the portrait details were influenced by Ian Macarthur and Gabi Trinkaus. The tree on the background suggests roots to culture and it’s impact on individual’s behaviour and feelings.

Beyond the Blue Void, 2018

Digital Photography

2030 x 3072 px

Beyond the Blue Void’ is Sirio’s first digital self portrait. While his face is cracked, bits of gold are used to ‘repair' his portrait, as the Japanese tradition of repairing with gold, Kintsugi, suggests that the medium becomes more valuable. Many patterns related to the early Albanian gold embroidered folkloric dresses can be observed, making in this way a link to his culture and it’s importance to self identity. In this way, different from Blue Void, the golden cracks symbolise light. On the whole, this piece portrays the turn of a new leaf through enlightenment.

Blue Klein Sea, 2018

Acrylic and PVA on Canvas

70 x 77 cm

The Blue Klein Sea series is inspired by Yves Klein. This work relates to the artist on a personal level, as the sea and the way different colours amalgamate by creating a harmonic relationship has always been fascinating to him. Blue hues are used to paint the pieces in acrylic. The message the artist is trying to convey is unclear, open to viewer's interpretations.

Conflicting journey to reality, 2017

Digital Photography

This peace in itself talks about dreams that often are a substitute to reality. A man to man conflict is established where the character fights itself in order to reach to a so portrayed imaginary hyperreality; a realm of magic. Subconscious is portrayed on the right, conscious on the centre and ideal self on the left. Again, the process of self realization and transformation is established in the piece. The image is as well associated with a dreamcatcher, protecting the character form the fears the present holds.

IMPEDED BY CULTURAL TABOOS

Impeed by Cultural Taboos by Sirio Berati

Impeded by Cultural Taboos, 2018

Digital Photography & Pencil

3072 x 3030 px

Impeded by cultural taboo is a series of two artworks, each in a different medium. Both of the pieces portray the expectation of society to conform to cultural norms. In this piece we can see how same cultures go along together, even though not as a part of a choice. Different from Creation of Adam, in this piece three rather than two hands are presented, challenging the historical concept of Michelangelo, where the third hand becomes an obstacle for cultural integration
